I’m Sarah Cochran, the creator of The Trainable Puppy. My background in animal science, reproductive physiology, and research shapes the way I approach puppy development, but my teaching is also grounded in years of raising, observing, and training puppies in the middle of everyday family life. I created Growing a Confident Puppy to help owners move beyond socialization checklists and learn how to understand the puppy actually standing in front of them.
As a mother of five and a lifelong dog owner and breeder, I know that puppy training must make sense in real homes and real schedules. My goal is to make current science clear, practical, and useful so you can choose meaningful experiences, recognize what your puppy is communicating, and adjust your approach without rushing or overwhelming them.

Who is Growing a Confident Puppy designed for?
Growing a Confident Puppy is designed for puppy owners who want to approach socialization thoughtfully instead of simply exposing their puppy to as many things as possible. It can help whether your puppy approaches the world boldly, prefers to observe before participating, or needs extra support in unfamiliar situations.
What age should my puppy begin this course?
You can begin using the course as soon as your puppy comes home, but the material remains useful throughout puppyhood and beyond. Although the primary socialization window is from around 3 to 14 weeks of age, confidence continues developing over time. Therefore, you can start with the puppy in front of you rather than trying to make up for anything you believe you missed.
Does my puppy need to be fully vaccinated before we begin?
No. Many early confidence building experiences can happen safely at home, in your yard, in the car, or through carefully planned observation. When deciding where your puppy can safely go in public, follow your veterinarian’s recommendations based on your puppy’s vaccination status and the disease risk in your area.
Is this course only for shy or fearful puppies?
No. Confident and outgoing puppies also benefit from learning how to observe, think, recover from excitement, and respond appropriately in new environments. The course helps you support your puppy’s individual needs rather than assuming that eagerness always means an experience is easy or productive.
Is this course a socialization checklist?
No. A checklist can tell you what your puppy encountered, but it cannot tell you what your puppy learned from the experience. This course teaches you how to observe your puppy’s response, interpret what you see, adjust the experience when necessary, and evaluate whether it actually supported confidence.
Does this course teach obedience skills?
The primary focus is confidence, socialization, thoughtful exposure, and helping your puppy learn how to navigate the world. You may use familiar skills to support your puppy during new experiences, but structured obedience training is covered more fully in Training the Puppy in Front of You: The First 30 Days.
